Normally, our body produces a group of hormones that helps regulate metabolism, inflammation, immune system function, sodium and water balance, and development of sexual characteristics. These hormones are called steroids. Our adrenal glands, located on top of our kidneys, are responsible for the production of these hormones. Cortisone is one of the steroids produced by our adrenal gland. This helps in regulating the body’s sodium and water balance, as well as, in reducing inflammation.
In year 1955, prednisone, a synthetic cortisone is introduced in the market. The adrenal gland secretes an amount of steroids equivalent to approximately 5 mg. of prednisone a day. Prednisone suppresses inflammation when prescribed in doses that go beyond natural levels and can help treat a variety of diseases. That is why prednisone was made.
